The women's soccer team finished the season with just two wins

Sandra Vacarino scored four of the team's 14 goals and was one of five players to start every game this year.

It was not quite the storybook ending for the women’s soccer team this season. This year was a rough campaign. They finish the year 2-14-1 and 1-7-0 in conference play. They were outscored by opponents 51-14, recorded a goal in only six games, and were shutout 11 times this year, and to end the season they loses 5-0 to finish in last place in the America East.

The team was not really expected to do well this season after losing a lot of players in the off season, but to only score 14 goals in a season is quite disappointing.

Against Boston University the team was just outmatched and did not even get off a shot while the Terriers rallied off 31.

Mo Van Vlerah recorded three saves and gave up three goals in the first half. With an understanding that the game was already over Alyssa Radu switched goalies at halftime to give Jaclyn Drummond some work this season and she recorded six saves and gave up two goals in the second half.

While the team loses five seniors, LaShawna Epps, JoAnne Jackson, Katie McKay, Naomi Opaleye, and Arielle Tagger, next year they will return a very talented senior class and all of their starters in hopes to make the conference tournament for the first time since the 2005 season.

There is one very good thing about the women’s soccer team this year that could lead to a little bit of success: they have the same coach as last year. Alyssa Radu may have her job for more than the one or two years that previous coaches have had because the athletic department really seems to like her. Stability at the top is always a good thing. When you change your coach year in and year out the players have to learn new philosophies and possibly new positions every year. That just hasn’t worked…ever.

But in all honesty even Radu knows it will be a completely successful year. She realizes it is going to be a rebuilding process and her goal for this year is simply to hit .500, something the team hasn’t done in three seasons.

But even hitting .500 may be tough. Last year the team scored only 10 goals in 19 games. Morgan Warrington scored five of those and has transferred to Delaware. So the team only returns five goals from a season ago.

Warrington is not the only loss however. The team lost a total of ten players from last year, four of whom graduated, and the rest left for one reason or another. The biggest losses will be Warrington, Christine Bacinski, last years starting goal keeper, Toni DiRenzo, last years all freshman team defender, and Ashley Singer, who was hurt last year but led the team with four goals in her freshman year.

The best guess at who the starters will be this year:

F: Brooke Piper
F: LeAnne Edgar
M: Danielle Kell
M: Megan McDonald
M: Sandra Vacarino
M: Christine Sadowski
B: Katie McKay
B: LaShawna Epps
B: Arielle Tagger
B: Erin Johnson
GK: Mo Van Vlerah

I’m sure a few freshman will be starting but before camp starts it’s hard to tell. The toughest thing for the team however is they once again have a big away schedule. While it’s not Radu’s fault, Tara Koleski signed contracts with teams during her tenure for that type of schedule for a few more years. In 2007 the team has the same type of schedule but they went seven straight games without scoring a goal and having four straight road games early could hurt.

This season is really going to be a test of just how good Radu is. If she can manage to get girls in the right places and have them play to their strengths like she did last year I really could see the team getting more wins than last year and nearing .500. But if she can’t the team could finish at the bottom one again.
