Freshman Kim Berghaus has done tremendous as the top singles player for the women's tennis team.

Junior transfer Rasid Winlaar joined the men’s tennis team late, but he’s been dominate ever since he stepped onto the court. Winklaar cruised to victories in both his singles match and doubles match as the men’s tennis team trumped Florida – Gulf Coast, 5-2.

Since getting into a groove with his game after not playing in so long, Winklaar has moved as high as the No. 2 singles spot on the team and with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Steve Binninger he is giving a strong case to move up even more.

Winklaar also teamed up with Adam Duprat, who lost his single match in three sets, 7-6, 4-6, 6-2, to beat Binninger and Frank Acierno, 8-3.

But UMBC’s top single player, Cristian Hodel, another newcomer to the team by way of transfer from national power Boise State, has also been coming on strong since joining the team. Hodel was taken to the brink by Matthew Rock as after winning a close first set, 7-6, he was beaten 6-3 in the second set. But the third set was all Hodel as he won the match with a 6-2 set victory.

Sophomore Gaulthier Berret improved to a team-best 9-1 record in single competition with a dominating 6-0, 6-2 victory over Collin Brown while Mwali Phiri topped Mitchell Lvovsky, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 in No. 6 singles.

Joseph Adewumi lost a close three-set match, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6, to Carlo Checchia in No. 3 singles.

Adewumi did however team up with Phiri to beat Checcia and Dean Tsamas, 9-8, to clinch the doubles point with Winklaar and Duprat winning as well. Hodel and Berret lost a close match, 8-7, to Rock and Brown.

The women’s team lost a close match to Florida – Gulf Coast, 4-3.

UMBC was swept in double competition, which proved to be the match-deciding point as they split the singles matches.

Kim Berghaus topped Morgan Bechtel in No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-1, while Julia Gragera-Cano won No. 3 singles over Bettina Botha, 6-3, 7-6. Emily Mannix impressively won a three-set match over Bibiana Almeida in No. 5 singles. After winning a close first set, 7-6, Mannix was blown out in the second set, 6-1. But she won a super tie breaker in the third set, 10-6 for the match victory.

Carmen Jackman, Heidi Danielsson, and Josefin Stange-Jonsson all lost their matches.

The women’s team, which finished the season 14-7 led by Alice Chen (15-6) and Barbara Couto (16-6 singles, 17-3 doubles) will be the fourth seed in the 2010 AEC Tournament and will play fifth seeds University at Albany at 10:00 am on April 30 in the quarterfinals of the tournament.

The last time the two teams met UMBC blanked Albany, 7-0, at UMBC Tennis Complex.

If UMBC were to beat UAlbany for a second time they would play top seeded Binghamton University in the semifinals, who beat UMBC 5-2, with all matches closely contested.

The men’s team however has clinched the number three seed in the tournament after boasting a 16-5 record. Joseph Adewumi led the team with an 18-5 record while Fredi Voorman and Adam Duprat each had 17.

They will face second seeded Stony Brook University on May 1 at 10:00 am in New Haven, Conn. The Retrievers dropped a 4-2 match to the Seawolves but had many close matches against them.

The men’s team will be attempting to reclaim the title that they won in 2007.
