Five receive all-conference honors

Thanks to a miracle the UMBC softball team made it to the post season but unfortunately a miracle for their opponent, Binghamton, took them out of the America East tournament when they lost to Binghamton, 3-2.

UMBC had a 2-1 lead after five innings but Binghamton scored two runs in the sixth inning to get away with the victory.

Jessica Warner gave UMBC a 1-0 lead in the first inning after she stole home plate on a double steal and Stephanie Weigman shut Binghamton out through three innings, not allowing a single hit until the fourth. Unfortunately one of her two hits given up in the fourth resulted in a run.

But UMBC kept fighting and re-took the lead in the fourth inning when Lynn Pronobis scored after Lauren O’Malley singled to center field with two outs and a 2-2 count.

Weigman pitched well for the rest of the game except for one series. Weigman walked back-to-back batters to start the sixth inning and both resulted in runs to give Binghamton a 3-2 lead and that lead stuck as UMBC went hitless in their final six at bats.

With this loss after a 9-1 loss to top-seeded Boston U on the first day of the tournament the Retrievers were eliminated from the 2011 America East tournament.

UMBC ends the season with a 25-26 overall record. Senior second baseman Lauren Brummell and junior Katie Ferguson both earned first-team all-conference honors while senior pitcher Weigman and senior outfielder Julia Culotta both received second-team honors. Warner was named to the all-rookie team.

Hartford upset Maine, puts UMBC in tournament

UMBC needed a miracle to get the final spot in the 2011 America East Championship, and that’s exactly what happened. Last weekend the women’s team swept Hartford to give them an 8-10 conference record and in order to stay in fourth place they needed Hartford to take at least two of their three games against Maine in the final weekend to. That happened. Maine split their Saturday double-header with Hartford and were then upset by the Hawks on Sunday.

With Maine dropping two of three games to Hartford rather than taking at least two games against them, they are out and UMBC is in with an 8-10 conference record. They will play Boston University on Thursday May 12.

They have to wait to see their postseason fate

The softball team’s two losses on the final day of their regular season schedule do not matter one bit. Both were against non-conference opponents and UMBC’s only hope for making the tournament now is if Maine were to lose to Hartford in the rubber match of their series on Sunday. Currently, UMBC is half a game behind Maine in the standings so should Maine lose, UMBC would be the fourth seed in the tournament.

But Coach Joe French set his team up nicely with two incredibly strong opponents at the end of the year should his team have to get ready for the tournament. He put UMBC in a tournament at Longwood and played East Carolina and the host Lancers, both teams have more than 30 wins this season.

While UMBC was unsuccessful in either attempt, there were some bright spots, namely Julia Culotta. Culotta has had an absolutely tremendous season her senior year and between the two games she went 3-for-6 with one run and two RBIs.

Against ECU she went 2-for-2 but the team only had six hits in the 4-0 loss. Then, against Longwood she hits a two-run home run in the fifth innings but again, the team struggled to get hits, getting only four in the 7-4 loss.

Stephanie Weigman pitched two complete game and got two wins in her final home series at UMBC.

A sweep of Hartford gave the softball team hope; hope of getting back into the post season this season. With three victories over Hartford UMBC improved to 8-10 in conference play, 1.5 games ahead of Maine, which has three games left this season, all against Hartford.

UMBC cannot control whether or not they get into the tournament, they need Hartford to win two of the three games in Orono, Maine, but they have put themselves in position to get in.

The Retrievers beat Hartford 8-1 in game one of the series. Stephanie Weigman pitched a complete seven inning game and allowed only three hits, which led to only one run for the Hawks.

But one run could be enough to win a game but the Retriever bats did enough to get the victory.

After two innings UMBC found themselves behind 1-0 but in the bottom of the third UMBC scored five runs after Angela Yannone hit a two-run home run and Katie Ferguson, Ashley Scroggin, and Ashley Carver all crossed the plate.

Then, in the fourth inning UMBC scored three more runs by way of run from Julia Culotta, Ferguson, and Scroggin.

A few hours after that victory UMBC piled on runs early in their 8-3 victory in game two, scoring all eight runs in the first four innings.

Heather Brown pitched all seven innings and the bats gave her enough runs to let her out there and the bullpen rested.

Jessica Warner hit a two-run home run following a lead-off walk of Brummell to take a 2-0 lead and then, one inning later, Brummell hit a two RBI double to center field for bring Amy Metcalfe and Lynn Pronobis in for run to double UMBC’s lead.

In the third inning Scroggin brought three runs in with one swing of the bat when she hit a double to center field, bringing in Ferguson, Yannone, and Warner.

The Retrievers added one more run in the fourth inning of game two when Pronobis scored on a wild pitch.

Game three was not quite as easy but superb pitching lead to the victory. Weigman pitched a shutout in her final game at the UMBC softball fields and allowed only five hits in a shutout.

But good pitching on the other side had UMBC shutout through five innings, but in that sixth inning both Carver and Brummell crossed the plate and Ferguson hit a two-run home run to bring in Amanda Damiano to give UMBC a 4-0 lead, which Weigman closed out.

Stephanie Weigman allowed only one run off four hits in six innings against the La Salle explorers while striking out eight batters but not even her tremendous outing was the highlight of the Retrievers’ 9-1 win. It was a 3-for-4 game from Julia Culotta featuring two home runs and four RBIs.

She was not the only Retriever to go yard, though. In the second inning Angela Yannone hit a two-run home run to bring Katie Ferguson in as UMBC took a 2-0 lead and while La Salle scored their lone run in the bottom of that inning the Retrievers added three more runs in the fourth as Ferguson hit a lead-off home run and Yannone and Ashley Carver both crossed home plate.

UMBC scored in the last three innings of the game. After their three runs in the fourth inning Culotta hit a solo-shot to left fiend in the fourth and hit a three-run home run in the sixth innings to bring Amanda Damiano and Lauren Brummell in for runs.

The pitching still stayed hot in game two of the double-header as Heather Brown went seven innings and only allowed one run of three hits but the hard-hitting offense was still there as well.

The Retrievers scored four runs in the first three innings and that was enough to get their 22nd win of the year.

Brummell hit a lead-off home run in the first inning and Culotta scored a bit later after Yannone hit an RBI single to center field.

UMBC added to the score with a run in each of the next two innings when Lynn Pronobis scored in the second and Ferguson hit a home run in the third.

UMBC managed only five hits and two runs in two games against Albany as they lost both sides of their Friday double-header.

The Retrievers lost game one 3-0 after they were dominated by Great Dane pitcher Brittany Schweiger. UMBC managed only one hit in the game, which came from Lauren Brummell in the fourth inning, but no other damage could be done as they were shutout.

The offense perked up a little bit in game two of the double-headers but it still wasn’t much. Brummell recorded two of the team’s four hits and scored one of the team’s two runs but the Great Danes had their way with Heather Brown, who allowed 10 runs off 10 hits, though thanks to five errors by the Retrievers only four of them were earned as UMBC fell to 20-20 and 5-9 in conference play.

Ashley Scroggin his her 10th home run of the season in the third inning of the first game to give UMBC a 3-1 lead after Stephanie Weigman, who pitched five innings and struck out six batters, gave up one of four runs she allowed in the game. Only three of the runs were earned.

The team won the second game of the three-game series

The UMBC softball team lost two of three games in their series against the Boston University Terriers.

The team won game two of their Saturday double-header, 5-1. Stephanie Weigman pitched a complete seven inning game and allowed only one unearned run off six hits and struck out five batters to improve her record to 12-7 and the team’s record to 19-13.

The lone run allowed came in the first inning, where UMBC had two errors but the Retrievers responded with four runs in the second inning. Angela Yannone started the inning off with a double and Jessica Warner, the next batter, brought her around with a double of her down. Lauren O’Malley responded with a double as well to bring Warner in. After two outs, with bases loaded, Ashley Scroggin his a single to center field, but her hit was enough to bring Lauren Brummell and Amy Metcalfe around for two unearned runs.

Weigman did not allow another run the rest of the game but the Retrievers added an insurance run in the fifth inning when Katie Ferguson hit a solo shot to left field.

That win though was sandwiched between a pair of losses. UMBC lost the first game of the series, 8-2. Heather Brown allowed eight runs, though only four we earned, off seven hits in five innings, four of which came in the first two innings before the Terriers scored four more in the fifth.

UMBC scored two runs in the second inning when Warner hit a two-run home run, bringing Yannone around with her. But they couldn’t do enough damage to get back into the game after they fell behind 4-2 after two innings.

The rubber match also went Boston’s way as they took the victory, 5-3.

Weigman started on the mound and was dealt the loss after pitching 7.1 innings.

After allowing three runs in the first inning Weigman shut the Terriers down and UMBC tied the score with two runs in the second inning off a first-pitch home run by Ferguson and an RBI single from Ashley Carver to bring Warner in for the second run. Then in the sixth innings O’Malley hit an RBI single to second base to bring Amanda Damiano in for a run but Weigman gave up a two-run home run in the eighth inning as the Terriers walked off with the victory.

Weigman pitched five innings in game one of the series and while she allowed four runs, only two earned, before Heather Brown gave up two runs, the bats gave her plenty of support. UMBC scored four runs in the first inning and then two more in the fifth inning to give UMBC a 6-1 lead.

UMBC scored two more runs the next inning, but in the same innings the Retrievers scored two in, Stony Brook scored two as well.

The Retrievers added one more insurance run in the seventh inning when Jessica Warner hit a solo shot to give UMBC the 9-5 victory.

Hoping to get her an extra win Joe French put Weigman in for 2.2 innings in game two of the series but the win went to Brown, who went 4.1 innings. She allowed five runs but once again, the offense gave enough run support to preserve the victory.

Weigman did not allow a single hit in her stint in the game and in the six runs in the first three innings was enough for UMBC to get the W.

Katie Ferguson hit a three-run home run in the first inning of her 3-for-4 night while Julia Culotta went 2-for-2 with two runs.

Weigman finally got 58th career win, topping Lauren Nicholson’s record, and she did so in stunning fashion. Weigman went the distance in the team’s 6-1 victory and allowed only one run off only five hits while striking out three batters.

Culotta led the team with two hits in two at bats for three runs with one RBI, thanks to her home run while Scroggin and Ferguson both went 2-for-4 and a run each. Scroggin had a home run and two RBIs.
