Gaulthier Berret saved five match points to come back and win the deciding match against Temple.

It couldn’t have gotten more intense than their match against Temple got for the men’s tennis team. Tied at 3-3 after losing the doubles point but leading singles matches 3-2, Gaulthier Berret was locked into what was the deciding match at No. 5 singles. Berret, who has lost only one match this whole season, lost the first set and was down 5-0 in the second set, one game away from not only his defeat, but the team’s defeat. But Berret rallied. He saved five match points and ended up winning the second set 7-6 and then won the third set, 5-3 after his opponent, Mansur Gishkaev, was disqualified for yelling an obscenity at the referee twice.

Berret returned a volley when he was leading 15-love in the ninth game of the set. Gishkaev called his return out, Berret asked for an overturn and the referee indeed agreed and felt the ball was actually in, making it 30-love. Gishkaev shouted an obscentity at the ref, which is an automatic one-point deduction, making it 40-love, and after the deduction he yelled another, giving Berret the game, set, and match point as his team topped Temple, 4-3.

Rasid Winklaar, in No. 2 singles, and Mwali Phiri, in No. 6 singles, both won their matches 6-2, 6-3, beating their opponents, Stanislav Stekolshikov and Andrey Morozov, respectively. Joe Adewumi also won his singles match in the No. 4 spot, 6-4, 6-3, beating Taylor Harrison.

Winklaar and Phiri also teamed up for the team’s lone doubles victory, beating Dmitry Vizhunov and Stekolshikov, 8-2.

The UMBC men’s tennis team lost a match to reigning conference champion Binghamton, 6-1.

UMBC dropped all three-doubles matches, however, Adam Duprat and Rasid Winklaar and Cristian Hodel and Gaulthier Berret both held their matches close, falling only 8-6.

The singles matches for the most part were not very close; however, the one victory came from none other than Berret, who is in the midst of a stellar sophomore season in which he has only had one loss.

Joe Adewumi sent the first set of his match into a super tiebreaker but lost in two.

Junior transfer Rasid Winlaar joined the men’s tennis team late, but he’s been dominate ever since he stepped onto the court. Winklaar cruised to victories in both his singles match and doubles match as the men’s tennis team trumped Florida – Gulf Coast, 5-2.

Since getting into a groove with his game after not playing in so long, Winklaar has moved as high as the No. 2 singles spot on the team and with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Steve Binninger he is giving a strong case to move up even more.

Winklaar also teamed up with Adam Duprat, who lost his single match in three sets, 7-6, 4-6, 6-2, to beat Binninger and Frank Acierno, 8-3.

But UMBC’s top single player, Cristian Hodel, another newcomer to the team by way of transfer from national power Boise State, has also been coming on strong since joining the team. Hodel was taken to the brink by Matthew Rock as after winning a close first set, 7-6, he was beaten 6-3 in the second set. But the third set was all Hodel as he won the match with a 6-2 set victory.

Sophomore Gaulthier Berret improved to a team-best 9-1 record in single competition with a dominating 6-0, 6-2 victory over Collin Brown while Mwali Phiri topped Mitchell Lvovsky, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 in No. 6 singles.

Joseph Adewumi lost a close three-set match, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6, to Carlo Checchia in No. 3 singles.

Adewumi did however team up with Phiri to beat Checcia and Dean Tsamas, 9-8, to clinch the doubles point with Winklaar and Duprat winning as well. Hodel and Berret lost a close match, 8-7, to Rock and Brown.

The women’s team lost a close match to Florida – Gulf Coast, 4-3.

UMBC was swept in double competition, which proved to be the match-deciding point as they split the singles matches.

Kim Berghaus topped Morgan Bechtel in No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-1, while Julia Gragera-Cano won No. 3 singles over Bettina Botha, 6-3, 7-6. Emily Mannix impressively won a three-set match over Bibiana Almeida in No. 5 singles. After winning a close first set, 7-6, Mannix was blown out in the second set, 6-1. But she won a super tie breaker in the third set, 10-6 for the match victory.

Carmen Jackman, Heidi Danielsson, and Josefin Stange-Jonsson all lost their matches.

Joe Adewumi was promoted to the team’s number one singles spot and came away victorious in the higher pressure spot as they topped Alex Veronis in three sets as the men’s tennis team won their sixth match by beating St. Joseph’s, 6-0.

Adewumi breezed through the first set, winning it 6-2. But Veronis evened the match with a 6-4 victory of his own. That loss did not stand well with Adewumi as he was able to close the match out with a 6-3 victory in the third set.

Cristian Hodel was moved down to the second spot after struggling early in the year, largely due to being unable to play tennis in the fall, but got back ton track with a two set victory over Jeff Kessler, 7-6 (5), 6-1.

Rasid Winklaar on his fourth match in six tries, beating Tommy Gates, 6-3, 6-4.

Adam Duprat improved his season singled record to 3-2 with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Peter Cognetti, ensuring the men’s tennis team of a victory.

The most intense match, however, came from Gaulthier Berret. For the fourth time this year Berret was taken into a third set but for the seventh time in eight matches he left victorious. Berret fell behind one set to none after being beaten 7-5, however, he was able to come back and take the final two sets as the team’s No. 5 singles player. Berret won the second set, 6-4, and finally took the third, 10-4 (STB).

Mwali Phiri completed the sweep with a dominating victory over Kristian Broaddus, 6-0, 6-1.

No doubles matches were played.

It wasn’t a win, but the men’s tennis team was the first team in 16 days to win a set against the Penn Quakers.

Gaulthier Berret improved his singles record to 6-1 as he topped Jason Magnes in three sets. After losing the first set, 6-4, Berret fought back and won his second set 6-3. The third set was a battle though, but Berrett scored the 10-6 win for the three-set win.

UMBC’s only other match point came from Rasid Winklaar, who improved his singles record to 3-2 with a 6-3, 6-1, two-set victory over Ivan Turudic in the third position.

The Retrievers lost all three doubles matches but Joe Adewumi and Mwali Phiri and Adam Duprat and Winklaar both took their opponents to the brink in 8-6 losses.

Adewumi lost only his third match of the season but did not let Phil Law get away with an easy victory. Adewumi took the first set 6-4 but forced extra points in the other two sets, 7-6 and 10-8.

Duprat also took his opponent to a three-sets before Penn took a match point. Nikola Kocovic won the first set, 6-2, but Duprat took the second set, 6-3. However, he wasn’t able to close the match out with a third set win, instead, Duprat well, 6-4.

Cristian Hodel and Phiri lost their matches in two sets.
