Ed Stephenson returns to UMBC as the team's associate head coach after having a lot of success as Binghamton's head coach.

Former head coach of the Binghamton Bearcats Ed Stephenson has been named the associate head men’s lacrosse coach at UMBC, head coach Don Zimmerman announced today.

Stephenson served as the head coach of UMBC’s conference-rival since it started in 2001 but resigned midseason after several disagreements with the administration in the Bearcats athletic department. Prior to that job, Stephenson was a full-time assistant for the Retrievers from 1995-2000.

At Binghamton Stephenson built a very successful program that went undefeated in 2004, only the team’s third season, and was named the America East Coach of the Year after the Bearcats had the nation’s top scoring defense. In 2006 Binghamton ranked in the top-20 for the first time, at No. 16.

More than just being a good coach, Stephenson has been a man honored for his high levels of integrity and character. He decided to leave Binghamton because he reportedly felt his players were unfairly treated and in 2004 and 2006 Binghamton earned the National Sportsmanship Award. Binghamton maintained the highest men’s lacrosse team grade-point average and earned the highest percentage of academic honorees in the America East from 2008-2010.

As a players Stephenson earned All-America honors as a defenseman at Towson University in his senior season in 1989 and later captained the South squad in the North-South All-Star Game that year. Then, after graduating and playing for the Pittsburgh Bulls of the Major Indoor Lacrosse League from 1990-1992, Stephenson served an assistant coach for the Tigers until 1995, when he was hired as an assistant under Zimmerman.

Stephenson will primarily work with the team’s defense, replacing former defensive assistant Pat Tracy, who was hired as the associate head coach at High Point just one month ago.

They lost to Hartford for a fourth-straight time, 14-11

Rob Grimm scored a career-high four goals but his efforts were not enough to get a victory.

Hartford just seems to have UMBC’s number. It’s been three years since the last time the Retrievers beat Hartford and Wednesday night they dropped their fourth-straight game against them, 14-11, ending their hopes of a late tournament run.

Things started out perfectly for the Retrievers. Through the first ten minutes they found themselves with a 4-1 lead over Hartford.

While Ryan Compitello responded to UMBC’s opening goal at 13:35 only five seconds later, the Retrievers ripped off three-straight scorers courtesy of Rob Grimm, Scott Jones, and Joe Lustgarten. But at 2:54 Ben Knapton scored his first goal of the season for the Hawks and that sparked a six goal run over a nine minutes span.

Following Knapton’s goal Carter Bender got free for a shot after making a dodge and run at the goal to make it a 4-3 game after the first quarter. Then, Martin Bowes tied the game one and a half minutes into the second quarter before Carter Bender scored his first of three goals three minutes later to give Hartford the lead. They built on that lead they Compitello netted his second of three goals in a man-up situation at 8:08 and only five ticks of the clock there they took a three goal lead over UMBC when Tim Fallon scored after running up the field after a face-off.

UMBC did respond when Grimm scored back-to-back goals to close out the first half, making it a 7-6 game in favor of the Hawks, but they could not extend that into a run in the second half.

Bowes scored another goal a few minutes into the second half and though Ryan Johnston made it a one goal game again at 7:09 in the third, Hartford scored five of the games next six goals to give them a five-goal lead with 7:10 left in the fourth quarter.

Bender started the run with 2:28 left in the third quarter and a few seconds later Jared Franze made it a 10-7 game at the end of the third quarter. Only 19 seconds into the fourth quarter Compitello completed his hat trick and after Grimm scored his career-high fourth goal of the game, Franze netted back-to-back goals, both assists by Rory Nunamacher, pretty much clinching the win for the Hawks.

But in the final six minutes the Retrievers did not go out with a fight. UMBC scored three of the final four goals in the game after Jamie Kimbles scored at 5:57 and Joe Lustgarten scored back-to-back Retriever goals but it was far from enough to get a win as UMBC got knocked out of the first round of the America East tournament for the second time in as many years.

Though UMBC was a perfect 19-for-19 in clears, Hartford dominated ground balls, 35-24, and beat UMBC on face-offs, 19-10.

Three were named to the all-conference second team.

With 22 goals this year, Scott Jones was far and away UMBC's best scorer.

It seems like it has been a long time since the UMBC men’s lacrosse team was without a representative on the America East all-conference first team but in 2011 the Retrievers had three be selected to the all-conference second team.

Scott Jones, Jamie Kimbles, and Sam McKelvey represented all three areas of the field for UMBC on the all conference list.

Jones was an afterthought coming into this year, scoring only two goals last season. But he was far and away UMBC’s most dangerous scorer this year. Jones scored a team-high 22 goals this season, five of which came against Albany on April 16, which was the most goals by a Retrievers since Matt Latham scored six on April 17, 2010. He has scored a point in all but one game this year and has the game-winning goal in all three of UMBC’s conference victories.

Meanwhile, Kimbles not only had to take on the responsibility as the team’s co-captain this season as a senior but he also had to work through an early season injury that made him miss most of the preseason. But when Kimbles finally got healthy he was a force and while he put up a respectable nine goals with eight assists, the more impressive part of his game was how he moved the ball around the field and managed the Retrievers’ offense. He scored four of his goals against Albany, where he also had two assists.

McKelvey was the final Retriever on the all-conference second team. Last year McKelvey was primarily used on the team’s man-down unit but this year he worked his way into the starting line up and was one of UMBC’s most disciplined defenders. He recorded 16 ground balls, caused four turnovers, and was only whistled for one foul all season.

Two other Retrievers were honored on the all-conference list. Zach Linkous was named to the conferences’ all-rookie team after playing in every game this season, starting six of them in the midfield, and scoring six goals with four assists. He had three multi-point games in his initial campaign.

Sophomore Neill Lewnes was named to the conference’s all-academic squad. The financial economics major battled through injuries this season but saw time in every game and recorded 40 ground balls and caused six turnovers while scoring six goals and having two assists.

They'll have to make a quick trip back there on Wednesday for the tournament

For a third-straight season the men’s lacrosse team lost to Hartford in the final game of the regular season. This time it snapped the team’s four-game winning-streak and more impactfully it pushed the Retrievers down to the number three seed in the America East tournament, where they will play in Hartford again on Wednesday.

It’s something about Scott Bement. He has some huge games against UMBC and this time in Hartford’s 10-6 victory over UMBC he saved 14 shots. Offensively, one again, it was Carter Bender that did all of the damage to the Retrievers as he had three goals with one assist while Aidan Genik and Martin Bowes each has two goals and one assist.

Scott Jones led the Retrievers with two goals while Rob Grimm scored one goal with two assists but Hartford had eight more ground balls that UMBC and caused seven turnovers while the Retrievers failed to cause any.

Hartford got started early with the games first three goals, the first two coming from Ganik and the third coming from Martin Bowes.

Jones got UMBC on the board with less than two minutes left in the first quarter off an assist from Grimm and the Retrievers managed to tie the game after goals from Zach Linkous and Ryan Johnston.

After Hartford snapped their 15 minutes scoring drought with Bowes’ second goal of the game Jones netted his second goal of the game with 1:21 left in the first half to make it a 4-4 game at the break.

But coming out of the second half the Hawks were on fire, shutting out the Retrievers in the third quarter and scoring five-straight goals, the last three coming from Bender.

UMBC’s first goal of the second half came with less than four minutes to go in the game when Scott Hopmann scored and after Rory Nunamacher scored Rob Grimm gave UMBC their sixth goal of the game with 2:08 left but at that point the game was over.

Now UMBC will have to travel back to Hartford on Wednesday for a rematch in the America East semifinals.

——————–

It’s senior day and that means UMBC has a bunch of guys out there playing, wanting to send their seniors off with a victory in their final regular season home game. But adding to their desire to get a big victory over Vermont, which would be their fourth-straight if they do, a win would mean they could be playing Hartford next week in Hartford for the rights to play a home semi-final game in the America East tournament as the number two seed, or if a miracle happens, they would be hosting it. But for either situation to happen, they have to win and while UMBC has dominated this matchup Vermont is a much improved team this year with a very good defense. Both teams score roughly the same number of goals but Vermont is allowing less than nine per game, so they are always in a position to win games. But what makes them so dangerous is that they have so many players on offense that can score. They may not all get on the same page in the same game, but they have five guys that can have a huge game and lead their team to a victory.

——————–

Starters

UMBC
A – Joe Lustgarten, Rob Grimm, Scott Jones
M – Dave Brown, Jamie Kimbles, Zach Linkous
D – Aaron Verardi, Sam McKelvey, David Stock

Vermont
A – Geoff Worley, Thomas Galvin, Drew Philie
M – Garrett Virtue, A.J. Masson, Luke Ryder
D – Evan O’Brien, Matt Jankow, Granger Jewett
GK – David Barton

No surprises at all in Don Zimmerman’s lineup, he’s going with the lineup that has won his team three-straight games, the only difference is that instead of Ryan Johnston, who has served much better off the bench, has been replaced by Rob Grimm, UMBC’s leading scorer.

——————–

First Quarter

13:50
It’s rainy here in Catonsville, the field is slick, guys are slipping, not getting good passes off, and there has already been a bunch of dropped passes.

12:51
Geoff Worley has a point-blank shot at UMBC’s goal but Brian McCullough got his stick up for the high save.

11:59 – UMBC Goal
Connor Finch scored his first career goal after a dodge to the left right in front of the crease, getting the ball past David Barton’s right side. 1-0 UMBC

10:56

UMBC evened their record at 5-5 with their fourth win in five games Saturday night, topping conference rival Albany, 13-9.

Sophomore attack Scott Jones scored four of his career-high five goals in the fourth quarter to lift UMBC past the Great Danes while senior midfielder Jamie Kimbles had four goals and two assists through the first three quarters to keep UMBC around in the game.

Albany scored the game’s first goal a few seconds less than five minutes into the game when Ty Thompson redirected a pass from Brian Caufield for his 20th goal of the year but less than a minute and a half later Kimbles tied the game in a man-up situation after Great Dane defender Mike Woods was called for a put, giving UMBC the extra-man opportunity.

Kimbles’ goal sparked a three-goal run for UMBC and at 2:19 he gave UMBC a 2-1 lead with his second goal of the game, this one off a pass from Dave Brown, who assisted five goals in the game.

With 59 seconds left in the first quarter Jones made it a two-goal game off a pass from Kimbles but Albany help UMBC without a score for most of the second quarter and tied things up after Caufield and Joe Resetartis each netted goals.

But with 12 seconds left in the half Scott Hopmann, who was out for a few games with an injury, ended nearly a 15 minute scoring drought for UMBC and gave the Retrievers a 4-3 advantage going into the locker room.

Brown then scored five minutes out of the break to give UMBC a two goal lead but the Great Danes once again tied it with back-to-back goals from Miles Thompson. His first goal came only nine seconds after Brown’s goal and his second goal was 25 seconds after that.

Kimbles gave UMBC a 6-5 lead at 7:25 off an assist from Brown but Albany took a lead with back-to-back goals, the second coming from Miles Thompson in a man-up situation, to give the Great Danes a 7-6 lead.

But UMBC never gave up and responded to those two goals with two goals of their own. With 1:34 left in the third quarter Kimbles scored his fourth goal of the game to tie the game at seven-each and only 28 second later short-stick defensive midfielder Brian Patton scored his first career goal it give UMBC an 8-7 lead.

Then Jones took over. After Matt Johnson tied the game back at eight each Jones scored his second goal of the game off a pass from Joe Lustgarten and following a game-tying goal from Ryan Feuerstein Jones ripped off three-straight from 9:53 to 2:37 to give UMBC a 12-9 lead.

Ethan Murphy scored his first goal of the season with 1:52 left to play for UMBC’s fourth-straight to close out the game.

UMBC improved to 2-1 in America East play, which puts them in a tie for second place in the conference with Hartford.

Dave Brown has four-point game while defense locks things down for second-straight win

Dave Brown scored three goals and had one assists to lead UMBC past Binghamton.

For all but the second quarter UMBC was forced to play Binghamton’s style of play, a slowed down, sloppy game of lacrosse. Outside of the second quarter, UMBC managed only two goals, and were shut out in the third quarter. But the defense kept them in the game the entire time and never let Binghamton get on much of a run while the Retriever offense was struggling.

Binghamton attack Matt Springer scored the game’s first goal three minutes into the game for his 22nd goal of the year, but UMBC shut him down the rest of the game, forcing the other Bearcat attacks to beat them and that did not happen.

Zach Linkous was able to even the game five minutes later in a man-up situation but neither team could net a goal the rest of the first quarter. But goals were much more common in the second quarter. Binghamton took a lead again not even two minutes into the second quarter but UMBC went on a six-goal run with three goals and an assist coming from Dave Brown in the run and two more coming from Scott Jones.

The Bearcats made things very interesting by closing out the half with back-to-back goals and netting the lone goal in the third quarter to make it a two-goal game but the Retriever defense only allowed them to score once more in the game while Linkous netted a second goal for extra insurance, clinching the 8-6 victory.

Each team had 15 saves in the game and while Binghamton out-shot UMBC 33-26, Brian McCullough saved six shots, three of which came in the fourth quarter.

*Probable Starters

——————-

Preview

UMBC may have gotten that big-time win that might spark their season on Wednesday, but now they have an even more important conference opponent on their hands in a televised game.

On March 19 Binhamton’s men’s lacrosse coach, Ed Stephenson, resigned from his position in protest because he felt the disciplinary action against three of his player that were allegedly involved in a fight was unfair. But interim coach Kevin McKeown has his squad playing well. They lost two games after the resignation of Stephenson but they got a big win over Vermont and stand ahead of UMBC in the conference standings right now.

Also, matchup wise Binghamton always gives UMBC trouble. Binghamton likes to run the clock, play a slow tempo game, and keep the team’s scores in single figures. UMBC on the other hand likes to run and build a lead as much as possible.

It depends who takes over. If UMBC cam run their game plan, and not turn the ball over against a team that causes 19 per game, the game would obviously be headed in their favor. But if Binghamton can halt them and have them guessing which one of their many scorers will be shooting the ball on a particular play, UMBC is going to have to grind it out for the entire game.

——————–

Starters

UMBC
A – Joe Lustgarten, Scott Jones, Ryan Johnston
M – Dave Brown, Jamie Kimbles, Neill Lewnes
D – Aaron Verardi, Sam McKelvey, David Stock
GK – Brian McCullough

Binghamton
A – Michael Antinozzi, Brandon Planck, Matt Springer
M – Frank Donlon, David Raleigh, Tyler Perrelle
D – Adam Pardi, Greg Cove, Derrick Danieu
GK – Kraig Heston

It doesn’t matter how good Rob Grimm did, the team won so Don Zimmerman is going with nearly the same thing he went with last time. The only change is Neill Lewnes is in the starting lineup, but that is because Zach Linkous, who is still available this game, went down with an injury last game.

——————–

First Quarter

11:53 – Binghamton Goal
Matt Springer just ran right to the middle of the field and scored from about 15 yards out after a cross field pass from Ben Waldron. 1-0 Bing

8:34 – Officials Timeout
It’s a pretty even game on possessions but Binghamton got that goal to take the advantage.

6:04 – UMBC Goal
Zach Linkous hit a high shot from about 15 yards out on a harsh angle after Joe Lustgarten, who as next to the cage, made a pass back to the midfield in the EMO. 1-1 Tied

3:19 – Officials Timeout
UMBC took advantage of a man-up situation after an illegal body check on Binghamton but overall they’re not movign the ball well and are turning it over far too often for comfort.

——————–

End of First Quarter – UMBC 1, Binghamton 1

Binghamton is definitely making UMBC play their style of lacrosse, a slowed down style. UMBC is still turning the ball over more than they should be but are starting to get more possessions.

———————

Second Quarter

13:32 – Binghamton Goal
David Raliegh took the ball from the midfield and ran up the right side of the goal and rocketed it past Brian McCullough from 20 yards out. 2-1 Binghamton

12:14 – UMBC Goal
Dave Brown ran inside but made a quick cut and turn to the outside for an equalizer. 2-2 Tied

11:35 – UMBC Goal
Rob Grimm made a cross-field pass from behind the net on the attacks right side to Neill Lewnes on the left side of the attack for the go-ahead goal from 15 yards out. 3-2 UMBC

9:38 – UMBC Goal
Dave Brown drove right down the middle of the field and blasted a high shot right past the Bearcat keeper. 4-2 UMBC

9:39 – Officials Timeout
UMBC is certainly in a grove now, scoring three-straight goals for the 4-2 lead.

8:41 – UMBC Goal
Joe Lustgarten, who was right behind the goal, passes the ball to Dave Brown from right in front of the goal and catches the Binghamton goalkeeper out of the goal for his third goal of the game. 5-2 UMBC

6:22 – UMBC Goal
UMBC is in a roll right now as Scott Jones took a pass from Dave Brown and scored from right outside the crease. 6-2 UMBC

5:34 – UMBC Goal
Scott Jones ran up the left side of the field and, dodged a defender and shot over another for UMBC’s sixth-straight goal. 7-2 UMBC

5:13 – Binghamton Goal
Brandon Planck scored in transition while David Stock got called for a slash, which will give Binghamton a man-advantage for one minute after the face-off. 7-3 UMBC

4:42 – Officials Timeout
UMBC will be down a man for 29 more seconds after the timeout but UMBC is certainly in a big run.

3:52 – Binghamton goal
Tyler Perrelle ran right around the defense and Brian McCullough’s view was blocked as Binghamton scored their second-straight goal. 7-4

0:05 – Timeout UMBC
UMBC will have possession after the timeout. They scrambled in transition on a pass inside and Zim just called an timeout to get set.

——————–

Halftime Score – UMBC 7, Binghamton 4

UMBC really got things going after Binghamton forced them to play their style of lacrosse but a 6-goal run really set things apart for UMBC. Dave Brown is on pace for a career-game with three goals and one assist in the first half.

——————–

Third Quarter

8:41 – Binghamton Goal
Brandon Planck scored an easy goal one-on-one with the keeper in transition after a bad scramble by UMBC on the other end after a bad pass up the field by Brian McCullough that resulted in a turnover. 7-5 UMBC

2:56 – Officials Timeout
Binghamton has gotten right back in this game and UMBc is not playing a fluid offense right now but they still have the advantage and could turn it around quick. UMBC leads, 7-5.

——————–

End of the Third Quarter – UMBC 7, Binghamton 5

Binghamton really shut UMBC down in that third quarter, forcing bad passed and turnovers. Fortunately for UMBC they only let Binghamton score on goal.

——————–

Fourth Quarter

11:01 – UMBC Goal
Zach Linkous scored UMBC’s first goal in over 25 minutes after Dave Brown, and Jamie Kimbles got the ball around to him. 8-5 UMBC

5:02 – Officials Timeout
This is a very sloppy game but UMBC isn’t letting Binghamton do much damage, which is bailing them out big time. UMBC leads, 8-5

4:08 – Binghamton Goal
David Raleigh finally does some damage after a sloppy UMBC series headed into another officials timeout. 8-6 UMBC

2:08 – UMBC Timeout

1:22 – Binghamton Timeout
There is still plenty of time left for Binghamton to come back but with the way this game has been going a two goal lead might be safe for the Retrievers.

——————–

Final Score – UMBC 8, Binghamton 5

Binghamton made UMBC their style of game, forcing turnovers and bad passes, but UMBC’s defense really locked things down and made up for all of UMBC’s mistakes.

Grimm scored five points in 10-9 victory over Towson

Rob Grimm posted three goals and had five assists in the team's win against Towson.

UMBC needed a jump start to their season in a big way and the men’s lacrosse team’s 10-9 victory over Beltway-rival Towson very well may be that spark.

Junior attack Rob Grimm didn’t start the game but tied a career-high five point effort with three goals and two assists. Grimm started the the game off with a goal 1:25 second into the game when he got control of the ball and stormed down the field. On the ensuing face-off, UMBC doubled their lead when Phil Poe, who went 13-8 from the X and led all player with eight ground balls. That wasn’t it for UMBC though. Jamie Kimbles gave UMBC a 3-0 advantage six minutes into the game.

Towson finally got on the scoreboard with 1:09 left in the game and were able to combat goals by Neill Lewnes, who scored with three ticks of the clock left in the first quarter, J.D. Harkey and an EMO goal by Grimm to cut tie the game at six a piece after scoring four-straight goals from 3:35 left in the half to 7:44 left in the third quarter.

Ryan Johnston, who was inserted into the starting lineup after posting two goals against Stony Brook, scored two again in the middle of a 4-1 run that also featured goals from Kimbles and Grimm.

The Tigers made things incredibly interesting at the end of the game though. At 1:02 Sean Maguire scored his second goal of the game and with 31 seconds remaining Pat Britton scored his only goal of the game to cut UMBC’s lead to one goal. Towson then got the face-off, giving Towson the final possession of the game, but they could not get a clean look at goal and Towson’s desperation shot from the left side of the goal sailed wide.

——————–

The men’s lacrosse team is desperate for a win right now. While they do have two, after falling to Stony Brook the way they did they need a big pick me up and nothing could be better than winning beating their cross-town rival. Towson has pretty big wins, particular one against Stony Brook, which rolled over UMBC last Friday night. But they’re still a questionable team and got demolished by Hofstra last week despite going into the half tied.

Towson is a very defensive team led by a great goalkeeper. They don’t like to give the other team the ball and sill take as much time off the clock they can when they have the ball.

——————-

Starters

UMBC
M – Carl Iacona, Adre Hodgson, Pat Britton
D – Marc Ingerman, John Fennessy, Michael Landy
GK – Travis Love

Rob Grimm is not starting for UMBC. I guess that’s what happens when the team is 2-5, changes have to be made and Zimmerman is mixing things up, going with Ryan Johnston, who just score two goals against Stony Brook.

——————–

First Quarter

1:25 – UMBC Goal
So much for Rob Grimm not starting. He can in right away and gave UMBC a quick lead. 1-0 UMBC

1:31 – UMBC Goal
Phil Poe took the face off, had a wide open field right in front of him, and storms right in for the quick goal. 2-0 UMBC

5:56 – UMBC Goal
UMBC is really playing with a purpose. Jamie Kimbles stormed around the goal and gave them their third goal to start the game. 3-0 UMBC

9:40
Towson changes their goalkeeper already. Travis Love is out and Andrew Wascavage is in for the Tigers.

13:51 – Towson Goal
Tim Stratton nets a goal to the lower left to end finally get the Tigers on the board. 3-1 UMBC

14:57 – UMBC Goal
Neill Lewnes cut any momentum Towson may have had with a quick goal off an assist from Rob Grimm. 4-1 UMBC

——————-

End of First Quarter – UMBC 4, Towson 1

UMBC is really playing with a purpose right now. They’re looking for a big win and they started out with three quick goals and are making Towson look silly on both sides of the ball.

——————–

Second Quarter

6:09 – Towson Goal
Thomas DeNapoli just gave Towson their second goal of the game. 4-2 UMBC

6:22 – UMBC Goal
After the goal Towson ran down the field and made a quick shot but Brian McCullough made the save, got it up to J.D. Harkey, and he took it the rest of the way for the goal. 5-2 UMBC

9:53
Towson’s Kevin Lalley got called for slashing (1 minute) and Jamie Kimbles committed a body check penalty (1 minute) to even the field).

10:20
Towson’s John Kenyon committed a 1 minute slashing penalty and will give UMBC a rare 10-9 advantage.

10:43
Rob Grimm scored his second goal of the game in the man-up situation off an assist from Scott Jones. 6-2 UMBC

11:45
Sean Maguire scores for Towson of a pass from Tim Stratton. 6-3 UMBC

——————–

Halftime: UMBC 6, Towson 3

UMBC is simply played good ball in the first half. Rob Grimm may not have started but he’s responsible for half of UMBC’s goals. Defensively, they’re making their slides, and really limiting the Tiger’s looks at the cage.

———————

Third Quarter

14:35 – Towson Goal
Matt Hughes took advantage of Zach Linkous going down with what looks to be a hamstring injury (possibly a cramp) and cut UMBC’s lead to two. 6-4 UMBC

5:55 – Towson Goal
Brian McCullough god a ground ball and moved up the field to make a pass but it was an off target one and Peter Mezzanotte got it and made a shot at an open net. 6-5 UMBC

7:16 – Towson Goal
Andrew Hogson tied the game up in an EMO with a shot that went right by Brian McCullough’s stick. 6-6 Tied

9:24 – UMBC Goal
Jamie Kimbles ended the Towson in an EMO off an assist from Rob Grimm to retake the lead. 7-6 UMBC

12:33 – UMBC Goal
Ryan Johnston scores his third goal in two games, gives UMBC a two goal lead. 8-6 UMBC

13:36 – Towson Goal
Tim Stratton gets Towson right back in the game. 8-7 UMBC

——————–

End of Third Quarter – UMBC 8, Towson 7

This game is far from over. Every time a team seems to be getting a huge swing of momentum the other team makes a big play get their team right back in it. UMBC is moving the ball better than Towson is right now though, responding to goals a lot faster.

———————-

Fourth Quarter

2:23 – UMBC Goal
Ryan Johnston scores his fourth goal in two games to give UMBC a two lead back off an assist from Rob Grimm, this second of the game. 9-7 UMBC

9:29 – UMBC Goal
Rob Grimm is putting the team on his back with his third goal of the game to go with two assist. 10-7 UMBC

13:58 – Towson Goal
Sean McGuire put Towson right back in the game with a goal. 10-9 UMBC

14:29 – Towson Goal
Pat Britton made thing really interesting. With 31 second left he made it a one goal game. 10-0 UMBC

———————–

Final Score – UMBC 10, Towson 9

Towson really made thing interesting down the stretch but UMBC really locked things down in the fourth quarter and never got too much going until the very end. UMBC really gets a big win.

The men's lacrosse team was shutout through three quarters in their 16-5 loss

UMBC has a really rough go of things in their conference opening game against preseason favorite Stony Brook, the 15th ranked team in the nation according to the USILA coach’s poll, as they lost, 16-5.

The talent difference between the two teams was staggering. It took UMBC over seven minutes to even tough the ball in the game and they failed to net a goal in the first three quarters.

The men’s lacrosse team was able to avoid being shut out and ripped in four goals in the fourth quarter but by that point the game was long over and Stony Brook had their back-ups in.

UMBC was dominated in possessions. Stony Brook face-off specialist Adam Rand won 15-of-18 challenges at the X as UMBC lost the battle, 18-7. UMBC manage only one win in the first half before Phil Poe came in and took six in the second half. The Retrievers also lost the ground ball battle, 44-18, and turned the ball over 17 times.

Junior goalkeeper Brian McCullough recorded 13 saves against Stony Brook but Jordan McBride trumped last years game in which he scored six goals off six shots with a seven goal effort while Kevin Crowley, the top pick in the MLL draft, scored two goals and had four assists, and Tom Compitello had two goals and two assists.

UMBC freshman Ryan Johnston was finally able to get UMBC on the scoreboard barely one minute into the fourth quarter while Neill Lewnes scored a second before Johnston struck again, but before UMBC’s three-goal run to start the quarter they were already trailing 14-0.

Joe Lustgarten and Zach Linkous both scored goals against Stony Brook as well.

After Scott Jones scored the first goal of the game, Quinnipiac went on a five-goal run50 take a 5-1 lead with 6:50 left in the first half.

Things were not going well for UMBC in that stretch. The Retrievers turned the ball over 11 times in the first half and was only able to clear the ball six times.

But UMBC responded, The defense shut Quinnipiac for nearly 27 minutes spanning three-quarters and went on a four-goal run of their own to tie the game at five.

UMBC did not score for nearly 23 minutes but at 5:36 Greg Korvin rocketed a shot into the goal and sparked their run. Barely a minute later Retriever defender Tim Shaeffer scored his first career goal to cut Quinnipiac’s lead to 5-3 headed into halftime.

The third quarter was all defense and fortunately for the Retrievers the only goal scored in that quarter, which came with 1:05 left, came from Scott Hopmann off an assist from Jamie Kimbles to get back to only one goal down.

Four minutes into the fourth quarter Kimbles, who was hampered by injuries early in the year, scored his first goal of the year to tie the game at 5-5.

When Quinnipiac did finally score again with 10:05 left in the fourth quarter to regain the lead, Neill Lewnes got the ball up the field after a face-off for a quick response to retie the game.

Quinnipiac took the lead again one minute later but Dave Brown, Hopmann, and Jones all scored to retake the lead and keep it.

Rob Grimm led the team with three assists.

*projected starters

——————–

Goals are going to be hard to come by for the Retrievers. Quinnipiac’s goalkeeper Kevin Benzing is in the middle of a fantastic season in the net. While Quinnipiac has not exactly played the top level competition that UMBC has, his reflexes have kept the Bobcats in every game they’ve played. In their most recent game the Bobcats fell to Hartford, a team that has beaten UMBC the last two seasons, by only one goal in overtime.

Eight days ago coach Don Zimmerman decided he needed to change some things up with his team and while his changed did not result in a win, he found a star in Scott Jones, who netted three goals against Maryland after he was moved from midfield up to attack for the first time. Zimmerman still has to find something that will improve the defense, but one thing is sure, he has guys that can score. Jones, Rob Grimm, Dave Brown, Scott Hopmann, these guys can score and as soon as Jamie Kimbles actually gets back to full health from his preseason injury, that adds another guy to the mix. Now it’s just a matter of getting them all going at the same time.

——————–

Starters

UMBC
A – Joe Lustgarten, Rob Grimm, Scott Jones
M – Dave Brown, Jamie Kimbles, Scott Hopmann
D – Aaron Verardi, Sam McKelvey, David Stock
GK – Brian McCullough

Quinnipiac
A – Christian Haggerty, Kevin Kelly, Jack Oppenheimer
M – Dylan Webster, Basil Kostaras, Jake Emms
D – Chris Coppolecchia, Jake Glebocki, Pat Gleeton
GK- Kevin Benzing

Brian McCullough is back in goal and Coach Don Zimmerman is apparently confident enough that he can bring stably to the goal over Adam Cohen, who had moment of brilliance but also made very questionable decisions. Jamie Kimbles is also apparently healthy enough to be back in the starting line up, moving back to his natural position in the midfield. Sam McKelvey is also getting his shot on defense. He was previously used primarily in man-down situation.

——————–

First Quarter

1:14 – UMBC Goal
Rob Grimm just backhanded the ball to Scott Jones, storming in towards the goal, and he finished the play with a shot right over the Quinnipiac goalkeeper. 1-0 UMBC

1:20 – Quinnipiac Goal
Dylan Webster just won a face-off and sprinted up the field before finding Chris Haggerty for the quick response goal. 1-1 UMBC

2:34 – Quinnipiac Goal
UMBC was called for pushing and in that 30 seconds that they were down a man Quinnipiac capitalized. 2-1 Quinnipiac

——————–

End of the First Quarter

Quinnipiac 2, UMBC 1

After a fluffy of goals in the first three minutes the game slow down and neither defense would let the other get a clean shot on target.

——————–

Second Quarter

4:54 – Quinnipiac Goal
Kevin Kelly flipped the ball to his left to find Mike Gast wide open for the one-on-one shot at the net. 3-1 Quinnipiac

5:52 – Quinnipiac Goal
Jake Emms hooked up with Christian Haggerty right in front of the goal to give Quinnipiac a nice cushion with nine minutes left in the half. 4-1 Quinnipiac

8:10 – Quinnipiac Goal
Jack Oppenheimer drove straight in for a goal off an assist from Kevin Kelly. 5-1 Quinnipiac

9:24 – UMBC Goal
Greg Korvin just blasted a shot into the goal from about 10 yards out off a pass from Neill Lewnes. 5-2 Quinnipiac

10:45 – UMBC Goal
UMBC defenseman Tim Shaeffer just scored his first career goal off a pass from Rob Grimm, cutting their deficit to two. 5-3 Quinnipiac

———————

Halftime

Quinnipiac 5, UMBC 3

UMBC’s midfield is not playing well at all, losing possession on balls. Their defense is actually playing well, but their offense went nearly 15 minutes without a goal. Somebody has to step up.

——————–

Third Quarter

13:55 – UMBC Goal
Scott Hopmann finally got some sort of offense going for UMBC this quarter, cutting the deficit to only one off a pass from Jamie Kimbles. 5-4 Quinnipiac

——————–

End of the Third Quarter

This game is far from over. When two defenses are controlling the game goals are hard to come by but UMBC has shut Quinnipiac out for 20 minutes of play.

——————–

Fourth Quarter

3:51 – UMBC Goal
Jamie Kimbles made a dodge and roll to get open for a shot to the lower left corner of the goal from about seven yards out to tie the game up. 5-5 Tied

4:55 – Quinnipiac Goal
Jake Emms just scored Quinnipiac’s first goal since midway through the second quarter to put UMBC back down. 6-5 Quinnipiac

5:27 – UMBC Goal
Neill Lewnes responds right after a faceoff to retire the game off a pass from Matt Gregoire. 6-6 Tied

6:23 – Quinnipiac Goal
Dylan Webster scores another fast goal to give Quinnipiac the lead with less than nine minutes remaining. 7-6 Quinnipiac

7:41 – UMBC Goal
Dave Brown ties it back up with a shot from a few feet away from the goal. 7-7 Tied

8:37 – UMBC Goal
Scott Hopmann scores a man-up goal to give UMBC the lead with 6:23 remaining. 8-7 UMBC

11:44 – UMBC Goal
Scott Jones caught a pass from Rob Grimm while he was right in front of the goal, spun around and during the spin he ripped it into the top right of the goal. 9-7 UMBC

——————–

Final Score

UMBC 9, Quinnipiac 7

UMBC was in a bad way early but after three quarters of defense the offense finally opened up and things got going and scored three-straight goals to end the game with their second victory of the year.

More to come
