The 16-year assistant will replace John Jancuska, who resigned a few days ago

It’s no surprise at all. A few days after John Jancuska announced his resignation as the head coach of the UMBC baseball team his long-time assistant Bob Mumma was named his successor. Mumma served as Jancuska’s assistant for the past 15 seasons and played for the Retrievers from 1990-1992.

As a player Mumma proved to be one of the best in school history. In three seasons Mumma hit 42 home runs, was named a Freshman All-American, East Coast Conference Players of the Year, and lead UMBC to their first NCAA Division I tournament. After his junior seasons Mumma was drafted in the 13th round of the MLB draft by the Chicago White Sox in 1992 and signed a contract with them. After two years, though, Mumma returned to UMBC to serve as an assistant coach under Jancuska since 1996.

Mumma is the school’s all-time leader in home runs, is tied for second in RBIs with 152, and ranks in the top 10 in six other offensive categories.

Mumma is only the fourth head baseball coach in school history.

Ream went 7-for-15 with five runs and eight RBIs in the final series of the season.

On the final day of the season the UMBC baseball team hit double-digit wins with a 10-3 victory over Hartford in game three of their series. The day prior the Retrievers topped Hartford in the series opener, 5-1.

UMBC finished the season 10-37 and 3-20 in conference play. Needless to say, it was another very trying season for the UMBC baseball team but the freshmen and sophomores continue to show a lot of good things in the split series with the Hawks.

In game one sophomore pitcher Mike Mitchell went seven innings and allowed only four hits and a single run. Meanwhile, at the plate, redshirt freshman D.J. Ream went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.

After giving up a run in the first inning Mitchell shutout the Hawks the rest of the way and in the fourth inning Brian Klukowicz hit a two-run home run to give UMBC the lead and two innings later Rich Conlon, Ream, and Max Himmelstein all crossed the plate for extra insurance.

Ream was fantastic in the series. In the other win he went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs and in the series he went 7-for-15 with five runs and eight RBIs.

UMBC took a 3-0 lead after one inning and added four runs in a third to extend UMBC’s lead to 7-1. While Hartford scored two more runs in the sixth inning, UMBC scored three more to make it a 10-3 victory.

Austin Drewyer pitched another complete game in his final collegiate start, allowing only three runs off six hits in seven innings.

UMBC dropped the second game of the series, 16-3, a game in which Ream went 2-for-5 with one RBI. UMBC also put up nine runs in the season finale as Conlon capped off his career with a 3-for-3 game with three runs and Himmelstein went 2-for-5 with a run and three RBIs. Ream went 1-for-3 with a run while also bringing in three runs in the game.

The UMBC baseball team won their fourth-straight midweek game to get their eighth win of the season by beating Beltway-Rival Towson, 13-7.

UMBC scored six runs in the first inning and took an 11-4 lead after four innings on their way to the victory.

D.J. Ream, Rick Phillips, and Brian Klukowicz all went 3-for-5 from the plat and all of them scored two runs each. Klukowicz added five RBIs partly thanks to two doubles in the game.

UMBC cycled through the lineup in the first innings, recording six runs off five hits while two errors helped get some extra base runners.

Rob McCabe opened the game with a single up the middle and was eventually brought in for the team’s first run when Max Himmelstein hit an RBI single to center field. Phillips them hit an RBI single to right field to bring Ream in for a run before Kluckowicz hit a two-run double to bring Phillips and Himmelstein in for runs.

The damage was not done, though. Klukowicz then scored after the Tiger short stop misplayed a ball hit by Curtis Schickner, who eventually made it around for a sixth run for UMBC.

Though Towson was able to score two runs in the second inning, Conlon and Himmelstein both crossed home plate to give UMBC an 8-2 lead after two innings before Brian Perlmutter and McCabe both scored in the third inning to make it a 10-2 game.

Towson scored two runs but for their fourth-straight inning to open the game the Retrievers got a run after Perlmutter hit a single up the middle to bring Klukowicz in for the score.

After Sean Swetnam allowed four runs off seven hits, though his team has a huge lead, Coach John Jancuska decided to go to the bullpen and brought out Luke Diblasi, who ended up winning is second game of the year after allowing only one unearned run off three third in four innings.

Samuel Bashioum allowed two runs in the final innings, after Klukowicz hit a two-run double to right field to bring Phillips and Ream in for runs in the eighth inning to give UMBC a 13-5 lead, but he did not let Towson rally a comeback as he closed out the game for the victory.

Rich Conlon scored three runs in game one of the series but even his efforts were not enough for a single win.

The UMBC baseball team dropped three games to Binghamton this weekend and has yet to win a single conference game with only three remaining on their schedule.

Binghamton outscored UMBC 24-7 in the three games, with the closest game being the first one. Game one of the series was a two-run game, however, like the other two blowouts, it was in favor of the Bearcats, 7-5.

Mike Mitchell went all six innings but allowed seven runs off 11 hits with more of the damage coming in the second inning, where Binghamton crossed the plate five times.

Making it an especially hard loss, UMBC had a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the second inning after Rich Conlon scored in the first after a double by Max Himmelstein and Rick Phillips scored after Rob McCabe hit a single up the middle in the second.

UMBC added a run in the fifth innings when Conlon crossed the plat again when D.J. Ream hit a single to left field and UMBC attempted a comeback in the seventh inning when Himmelstein hit a two RBI single to left field to bring Conlon in for a third run and Casey Mediary in for his first of the game but they could not get anything else to extend the game.

Game two of the series was simply not their game. UMBC managed only two hits and neither one was able to result in a run. Binghamton pitcher Mike Augliera struck out 15 Retrievers batters while the UMBC pitching staff struggled, using three relievers to bail out Luke DiBlasi, who allowed five runs in the fourth innings, but Josh Dick allowed four more in the seventh inning of the 9-0 loss.

The final game of the series was collaboration between the team’s senior ace, Austin Drewyer, and the team’s young gun, freshman Jon Cohn. Each pitcher threw for four innings and Cohn allowed only two hits in relief. However, the Bearcats did a lot of damage against Drewyer. They scored all eight runs in the first four innings and the offense managed only two runs off nine hits, both of which came in the sixth innings when Ream and Kevin Kean crossed the plate.

A big first inning for the baseball team led them to not only their third-straight mid-week victory but it also gave them their seventh victory of the season.

UMBC scored three runs in the first inning in their 4-3 victory that was won by Josh Dick in relief.

Freshman pitcher Jon Cohn started the game on the mound and while he allowed one run in the first inning, the bats really helped him out. Rob McCabe hit a lead-off double down the first field line and advanced to third when Rich Conlon moved him over. Brian Klukowicz then hit a single to second base but it was enough for McCabe to score. Max Himmelstein reached base on his first at bat in the game wile D.J. Ream hit a two RBI double to left center to give UMBC a 3-1 lead.

Cohn allowed another run in the third inning but Dick pitched four shutout innings in relief, where he only allowed two runs.

UMBC added a run in the seventh inning when Klukowicz brought McCabe in for his second run of the game while Samuel Bashioum closed it out for a save.

UMBC falls to 0-13 in conference play

Through 13 conference games the UMBC baseball team still has a 0 in the wins column. This weekend the baseball team played four games against Maine but were outscored 24-8 in four-straight losses.

Despite Mike Mitchell’s complete game the bats were completely cold in the first game of the four-game series. UMBC managed only five hits and could not score in the first game.

Then, in game two, the team managed to score five runs off eight hits but the pitchers hit a wall. Sean Swetnam gave up seven runs (six earned) off eight runs in only four innings while Josh Dick, Steve Miller, and Shane Vlasic allowed a combined four runs in relief.

The second day as much like the first day as in game one the pitching was great the bats couldn’t get the jobs done while in game two the opponent hit too many runs to get a victory.

Luke Diblasi went eight innings and allowed only three runs off seven hits but the Retrievers managed only four hits, which resulted in only two runs, one of which was a solo shot by D.J. Ream.

In the final game Austin Drewyer pitched a complete game but allowed six runs in the 6-1 loss.

The game was delayed 78 minutes or lighting

There was a 78 minute delay in the Retriever’s game against in-state rival Mount St. Mary’s after lighting in the top of the fourth innings. That was after UMBC has a 4-1 lead over the Mountaineers.

But the lighting did not effect UMBC. The pitching remained solid and the hits kept coming. In fact, in the bottom of the fourth inning UMBC scored two more runs to extend their lead.

UMBC tallied 11 hits in their 7-2 victory over Mount St. Mary’s while also using five different pitchers as the Retrievers picked up their sixth victory of the season.

Austin Drewyer sent Mount St. Mary’s first three batters back to the dugout and in the top of the inning and UMBC got on the board in the first inning when Rob McCabe scored after a lead-off walk.

Then, John Jancuska switched pitchers to Mike Mitchell and while he allowed the game to be tied the Retrievers has to runs scored by D.J. Ream and McCabe after Max Himmelstein hit a single to left center following a score by Casey Mediary.

Once again, Jancuska used this non-conference game to get multiple pitchers work as he switched to Luke Diblasi in the third inning. Even with a long delay Diblasi lasted shutout innings and struck out three Mountaineer batters.

He also had more run support in the fourth innings when Rick Phillips hit a single up the middle to bring Ream and Medairy in for runs.

With John Cohn on the mound UMBC added a run in the sixth innings from Rich Conlon to clinch give extra insurance in he win.

Once again, Stony Brook had their way with the Retrievers and swept their series against them for the second time in as many weeks, winning game three, 13-2.

Austin Drewyer has done very well this year but he got hammers by the Seawolves, allowing nine runs off 10 hits in 4.1 innings of work. But five errors lead to three of them being unearned.

Stony Brook scored three runs in the second inning, another in the third, and Coach John Jancuska pulled the plug on his ace after he allowed five runs in the fifth innings.

Luke Diblasi came into the game to replace Drewyer and allowed only two hits in 2.2 innings of relief work but as soon as he got take out for Samuel Bashioum Stony Brook started hitting again and scored four runs in the eight inning before John Cohn shut they would in the ninth inning, getting every hit by way of strikeout.

That ninth inning was the only time UMBC has any sort of offensive success. Rob McCabe hit a single to right field but it was deep enough to bring D.J. Smith and Brian Klukowicz in for scores, however, by that point, two runs were far from enough to get a victory.

The Retrievers were outscored 17-3 in the two games.

Plain and simple, Stony Brook has a better baseball team than UMBC does. The Retrievers were swept in a Friday double-header by a combined score of 17-3, this one weekend after the Retrievers lost three games to the Seawolves by a combined scored of 34-8. The last two seasons the Retrievers have played Stony Brook 11 times, with one more game coming tomorrow, and have been outscored 151-20.

UMBC actually looked to be in decent shape in game one of the Friday double-header. Mike Mitchell shut Stony Brook out through three innings and Rob McCabe put UMBC in front, 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning but Stony Brook scored fix runs off four hits in the fourth inning.

The Retrievers could not come back from that, however, in the fifth inning D.J. Ream and Rich Conlon both scored to make it a 6-3 game, which was eventually the final scored.

Game two was much less of a fight for UMBC. The Retrievers managed only five hits in their 11-0 loss.

But one again, Stony Brook was shutout through three innings but after taking a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning the Seawolves scored nine runs in the sixths inning and another in the ninth inning.
