Late Drexel Goal Drops Women’s Soccer, 1-0

Freshman midfielder Nicole Clark has seen extensive time in both of the team's games.

With just six minutes remaining in the women’s soccer team’s second game of the season Drexel University defender Andi Stampone kicked a loose ball from the right side of the penalty area inside to forward Ashley Klun, who kicked the ball right down the center for the games lone goal.

UMBC could not come back from the late score and fell to 1-1 with three more road games ahead of them.

While Mo Van Vlerah started the season after being its full time goalie last year, Alyssa Radu made a change, putting freshman Lauren Kadet between the posts. Kadet, who was in a close preseason battle with Van Vlerah for the goalkeeper job, was incredible in hr debut as she made 11 saves and gave up just one goal, though it was the game winner.

UMBC had a few good chances to score, the best game just a few minutes before Drexel went up 1-0 when sophomore forward Rachel McKee went one-on-one with the Drexel keeper but hit the crossbar on her shot. McKee led the team with four shots, two of which were on goal.

The team also played their second game without senior defender Erin Johnson, who has been held out of the first two contests with minor injuries. She should however be able to make it back for the team’s third game against Longwood University on August 27.

Following a road game at Longwood the Retrievers will have two more as they travel two Campbell and George Washington University.
