It Could Be Another Worrisome Summer For Men’s Lacrosse

Once again the question of whether or not Men’s Lacrosse Coach Don Zimmerman will be at the helm of the UMBC lacrosse program is a hot question.  Two summers ago Zimmerman was one of the top candidates to take over University of North Carolina’s team but obviously he declined the chance and signed a contract extension through 2013-2014.  But this time the 17-year coach may be the top candidate for a much more intriguing job.  With the resignation of University of Maryland’s Dave Cottle, Zimmerman’s name may very well be at the top of another coaching search’s list of candidates.

While Zimmerman declined an opportunity to coach at UNC, the reasons were likely because he would have had to move to take the job, and with his family having been settled in Maryland for basically his entire life, and with his son still in high school at the time, that could have made the decision easier to decline.  But clearly those are non-issues with a move to UMD.

Zimmerman seemed genuine about wanting to stay at UMBC and build the program and shows that by signing a contract extension two years ago, but this could still be a possibility.

His team may have had a down season at just 4-9 this year, but UMBC’s best chances of winning are with Zimmerman in charge of the program.  He has proven that he is one of the best coaches in the country, if not the best, but is still, even after 17 years, building the UMBC program.

It is no real secret that Zimmerman has had his run-ins with UMD in the past and he is not very fond of the program, especially after rumors that Debbie Yow was the reason that UMBC, despite being No. 4 in the nation with wins over both UMD and University of Denver, had to travel to play No. 2 University of Virginia in the first round of the NCAA tournament just one year after the Retrievers upset the Terps.  But it is still a very intriguing storyline to follow and updates will be provided throughout the summer as soon as they are presented.
