The men’s and women’s tennis teams both attempted to bounce back from one-sided losses to conference foe Binghamton with a short road trip to Temple on Wednesday. The men were able to eek by the Owls, 4-3 but unfortunately for the women, they suffered their second straight loss as they fell 6-1.
Men’s Tennis: UMBC 4, Temple 3
As all matches do, the teams started off fighting for match point by winning two of the three doubles matches.
UMBC struck first as the number two squad of Gaulthier Berrett and Adam Duprat beat Mansure Gishkaev and Stanislav Stekolshikov in dominating fashion, 8-1.
But the Owls got right back in it as their number one squad of Filip Rams and Dmitry Vizhunov downed Allen Tsang and Fredi Voorman, 8-5.
With the doubles matched tied, UMBC needed senior Chris Meyer and junior Mwali Phiri to team up for a victory over Kacper Rams and Andrey Morozav. That match seemed like it would never end but eventually UMBC took the victory 9-8 (7-3) for the important doubles match point, which was later the deciding factor of the match.
The team’s split the score in singles competition as Duprat was able to get a 6-1, 6-4 victory, Voorman was able to get a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 three set victory, and Phiri was able to get a close 7-5, 6-3 victory.
Meyer, Berrett, and Joe Adewumi all dropped their singled matched. Adewumi lost in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, but the doubles point got the win for UMBC.
Women’s Tennis: Temple 6, UMBC 1
The women’s tennis team managed just two wins over Temple, but unfortunately one of them was a lone doubles victory, meaning the team could get just one match point in the 6-1 loss.
The brazilian duo of Barbara Couto and Lorena Valente teamed up to topple May Johnson and Theresa Stangl in an 8-0 sweep, but the other two teams could not get victories, giving Temple to doubles point.
In singles competition the lone victory came from the team’s number one player, Alice Chen, who beat Josephine Bergman in impressive fashion, 6-2, 6-1.
